In ATC, airspace used for en-route traffic is designated as a Control Area. This space is carved out to manage aircraft as they travel along routes between airports, with controllers providing separation and sequencing for flights at cruise levels. A CTR, by contrast, is the airspace around an airport from the surface up to a specified top, focusing on the approach and departure area rather than along en-route routes. A Terminal Control Area (TMA) serves the busy airspace around large airports for arrivals and departures. The term you don’t see in standard classifications is TIZ. So the en-route controlled airspace is called a Control Area.
